War of 1812 Reenactors' Bootcamp

Dates for Event: May 18, 2013

Description of Event

This year marks the bicentennial of the start of the War of 1812, “the Second War of Independence.”  The War of 1812 Boot Camp is a unique opportunity for people of all ages to get an experiential understanding of this important time in history and how it touched four nations:

Immerse yourself in an authentic 1812 military encampment and  learn about the camp life of a soldier:

  • Experience life as it was 200 years ago
  • Discover the pivotal role the Battle of Plattsburgh played in the War of 1812
  • Learn why Lake Champlain was so important in the minds of the British
  • Dress in period costumes (provided) and use reproductions of artifacts of that time
  • Acquire new "old" skills utilized in the 19th Century
  • Celebrate with Plattsburgh's own "Plucky Rooster Ale," brewed in the tradition of our forefathers (for those over 21 years of age)

Historians and period reeanactors will share their expertise with you in a relaxed atmosphere.  Each boot camp is kept small and out of the public eye so there is no pressure to perform.  Platoon size will range from 4-12 people.

Each bootcamp will take place at the War of 1812 Museum, operated by the Battle of Plattsburgh Association, located at 31 Washington Place, Plattsburgh, NY 12903.
