Explore the Passage
Lakes to Locks Passage, "The Great Northeast Journey," is your ticket to a unique North American experience. Between New York's Mohawk River and the St. Lawrence in Quebec, flows North America's first inter-connected waterway that shaped the nation-building activities of the United States and Canada. By bike, foot, boat or car, Lakes to Locks Passage provides access to over 225 miles of diverse historic and recreational sites along the Champlain Canal, Upper Hudson River, Lake George, Lake Champlain in New York, Chambly Canal and Richelieu River of Quebec.
Streams of history flow through these valleys, reflecting "lives" that continue to unfold. Be sure to visit sites and interpretive exhibits throughout the region to track the overlapping threads of the "Four Lives of Lakes to Locks Passage." The distinctive influence of French, English and Dutch settlers is still evident today in the communities along the river waterfalls and lakeshore harbors. A series of 32 Waypoint Communities have been designated to "meet and greet" the Lakes to Locks Passage visitor. Nearly every one has a driving, biking or walking tour, which allows you to experience the wealth of architectural styles and discover the numerous historic sites.
