He moved to Albany in 1986 to begin the process of taking over his parent's travel company, Plaza Travel/Plaza Meetings. The company is half traditional travel agency and half a meeting and convention planning company. He was named President in 1995 and worked there until 2011. During that time he started Albany's first inbound tour service, built a staff of ten tour guides that could deliver solid tours of Albany and parts of the Capital Region. About half of the staff was bilingual to serve some foreign clientele. In 2004, John was approached by Bob Wolfgang to be a partner in the creation of the Albany Aqua Ducks, he became one of the original three partners that started this attraction that delivered amphibious tours of Albany. John sold his shares in 2010.
John was the Chair of the Albany Convention & Visitors Bureau Board for six years and served on the Executive Committee and Board of the Albany-Colonie Chamber for nine years combined. He has been involved in tourism from both the supply side and the buying side and has a feel for what a destination should have to be attractive.
