In September of 1868, chemist and mineralogist Professor Herring described Split Rock Mountain as containing “the largest deposit of Magnetic Ore in the State of New York, and as yet I have seen none to equal it in the United States." The altered landscape of the shoreline of Ore Bed Harbor is all the remains of the magnetite iron-ore mining that took place here in the 1860s. This was also the site of a complete mini village with store, all connected to the lakefront via wooden staircase up the mountain side.
