The Whallonsburg Grange Hall was renovated by volunteer labor over the course of seven years. Managed by the Whallonsburg Civic Association and owned by the Town of Essex, the building now serves as a community gathering space for eastern Essex County, hosting musical and theatrical performances, lectures, forums, and workshops. Members of the local community can rent the hall for their private events at rates that make the building an affordable, attractive community asset. The Grange Hall also works to support local agriculture in the region by hosting markets and a buying club, and by providing a shared-use community kitchen available for rent by small scale food processors.
The Whallonsburg Civic Association has seventeen board members and several committees that make it possible to do all the programming, kitchen renting, and maintenance involved with a historic building. We also have a group of event crew volunteers that take tickets, direct the parking lot, set up chairs and clean up after events. These board members and volunteers are the heart of the organization, and are coordinated by one part-time staff person.
How you Can Support this Effort
There is something at the Grange for everyone! You can attend events; be part of an event crew; organize cooking workshops at the kitchen; buy local products made at the kitchen; serve on a committee; or attend a building repair workday. Being involved at the Whallonsburg Grange is about coming together to meet our economic needs and our social ones. Especially in rural areas, we need each other!
